ARTIST PROFILE

Nicole paints whimsical abstract watercolors with lots of pattern play and some illustrative elements, often inspired by modern textile design, and the natural world.  Favorite subjects include biological illustrations, sea life and graphic-feeling floral patterns. She interprets natural textures and patterns, like the layered rings in a piece of agate, in loose, layered watercolor versions.

“I draw and paint to process the data that backs up in my mental and emotional channels. Ideas tumble like socks in the dryer while I brush the painting along, and through the planning and the sketching and the mixing, something more comes to the work than I could have known I’d bring to it.”

Nicole’s inspirations include traditional Indian mendhi art, Maori and Native American tribal art, Alphonse Mucha’s poster designs, art deco ornamental design, British watercolorist Helen Wells works, Japanese textile designer Marimekko’s prints, contemporary Brazilian graphic design, naturally occurring textures and patterns, toys, candy packaging and children’s book illustration.

“This work is important to me because it’s the most satisfyingly hard,  joyful thing I do, aside from parenting my son. There is always something new to learn, and another perspective to explore.”
